Art, Design & Photography: Curriculum Intent

Key Stage 3 & 4

Our Art and Design curriculum has been designed to inspire creativity in all students, helping them explore their own ideas and develop the skills needed to express themselves. Through studying a range of artists, both past and present, students gain a broad understanding of the art world, while discovering and honing their own unique talents. This foundation helps them not only grow as artists but also prepares them for life beyond school, where creativity plays a vital role. We want our students to feel confident in sharing their opinions about art, and to appreciate how art and design have shaped the world around them. By learning about different styles and techniques, and understanding the cultural and historical importance of art, students will see how it connects to other areas of their school experience, such as Maths, and even their lives outside of school.

At King’s Leadership Phoenix Academy, we’ve designed our Art and Design curriculum thoughtfully, making sure students build their knowledge and skills step by step. This helps them feel a sense of progression as they work towards ambitious goals.

Our curriculum aims to ensure that all students:

  • Create original work, exploring their own ideas and recording their experiences
  • Develop confidence and skill in drawing, painting, and other art techniques
  • Learn to discuss and evaluate artwork using the right vocabulary
  • Discover great artists and designers, and understand how their work reflects different times and cultures

Curriculum Long Term Plan and Aims

Our long-term plan has been carefully sequenced to build skills over time, ensuring that students have a clear understanding of various drawing techniques before moving on to more challenging and open-ended tasks. We follow a structured progression, ensuring that students continually build upon their skills and understanding as they advance through the curriculum.

Each year is carefully planned to balance progression, creativity, and critical thinking. We recognise that each student’s creative journey is unique. Our long-term plan incorporates flexibility, allowing students to explore areas of personal interest whilst ensuring all learners meet essential objectives.

Assessment

We use a variety of ways to check how well students are doing. These include questions to see what they already know and help identify common mistakes, alongside more formal assessments throughout the year. This helps us support students as they grow in both skill and confidence in their artistic journey and provides them with the knowledge and understanding to achieve well at GCSE.
